The Rev. Sarah D. Máto, Rector

The Rev. Sarah D. Máto is an Episcopal priest who previously served as the rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in North Andover, Massachusetts. She later served as the Bridge Priest at the Parish of St. John the Evangelist in Hingham, and earlier in her ministry was the Assistant Rector at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans. She was ordained to the diaconate and priesthood in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts by the Rt. Rev. M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE, and is an associate of the Society of St. Margaret.

An active member of the Diocese of Massachusetts, Sarah currently serves on the Commission on Ministry and the Racial Justice/Commission on Ministry Task Force. She has also served as Supervisor to the coordinator for the Lower Merrimack Valley Collaborative and as a member of the Bishop Nominating Committee.

She holds a Master of Divinity, a Certificate in Spirituality, and an advanced Master of Sacred Theology. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree at the Sewanee School of Theology in Tennessee. Her advanced master’s thesis, Divine Beauty: Experiencing God Through Sight and Sound, explores theological aesthetics in both Western and Eastern Christian spirituality.

Before entering seminary, Sarah earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, and taught in the public school system for several years. A trained soprano, she studied voice at the Capital University Conservatory of Music and has performed with the Capital University Chapel Choir and Choral Union, the Chatham Chorale, the Sewanee Chorale, and The Masterworks Chorale in the greater Boston area.

Sarah loves being a mom to her two young children, Aidan and Anna. She also enjoys sharing cuddles with the family cat, Ruthie, and their two dogs—a Labradoodle named Luna and her Shepadoodle, Sophie, who is a certified therapy dog and loves visiting the sick and homebound.

The Rev. Deacon Virgilio Fortuna, BSG
Deacon

We are delighted to welcome The Rev. Deacon Virgilio Fortuna, BSG, who began his ministry with St. Andrew’s on September 14.

Deacon Virgilio—whose initials BSG stand for the Brotherhood of St. Gregory, an Episcopal community of brothers dedicated to prayer and service—brings a deep commitment to compassionate, inclusive ministry. Born in the Azores, Portugal, and raised in the United States after immigrating with his family in 1966, Virgilio’s early life was grounded in love, generosity, and care for others.

Ordained by Bishop Tom Shaw in 2012, Virgilio has faithfully served the Church with joy and conviction, ministering in both English and Portuguese. He describes himself as “the deacon with the mouth”—a title he embraces as a reminder that deacons are called to speak for the voiceless and advocate for those at the margins.

An openly gay man, Virgilio was married to his beloved partner for 12 years before his partner’s passing. His ministry is especially shaped by a desire to serve all of God’s people, particularly those who have experienced exclusion from the Church.

Virgilio says he feels blessed to serve alongside Sarah+ and the people of St. Andrew’s, and he looks forward to getting to know everyone personally. If you see him around, please say hello!
